Crafts

Crafts
We make a range of quality craft items for use in ritual, personal devotional practice and ornamentation.

All items are hand-made to order with a thoughtful and spiritial attitude. You can specify the materials used and a colour-theme. All items are made with care and attention to detail.

Please note that we only keep a minimum of finished stock and we don't have a 'shop'; everything is made to order, with the commissioner in mind. This will atune these items to the recipient. This does mean that craft items can sometimes take a while to be made, especially in summer (when we are busy marrying people and showing them around Orkney). Please be patient, although we will endeavour to deliver to a specific date if we can.

All materials are sourced ethically and in an environmentally friendly manner from Orkney, wherever possible. Many items are found during our beach combing sessions. We specialise in using driftwood in our craft items.

Take a piece of Orkney's spirituality away with you - let our peace and tranquility follow you home.

NB None of our craft items are suitable as toys, please do not let children or animals play with them.
Wands
Our handmade wands are made of quality wood (naturally twisted or driftwood), semi-precious stones, and other natural materials.

We usually leave the bindings uncut so you can personalise them with your own feathers or charms.

Please order via email, stating your full requirements and allow plenty of time for manufacture. Prices start at £30 plus P&P (at cost) to anywhere in the world.
Shamanic Rattles
Our handmade rattles are perfect for calling in the ancestors and spirits. They are made of quality wood, semi-precious stones, and other natural materials. The raw hide is ethically sourced and you can specify the contents for the rattling inside! Please order via email, stating your full requirements and allow plenty of time for manufacture. Prices start at £40 plus P&P (at cost) to anywhere in the world.
Mini-besoms
Our handmade miniature besoms or broomsticks have two sources of inspiration:
  • Some couples choose to jump the broomstick at the close of their wedding ritual and we had a number of people asking if they could purchase the broomstick which they jumped over. Our own full-sized besom ('Esmerelda') is not for sale, so these are offered as an alternative.
  • The besoms are based on pot-scrapers which were used in the past for washing up in Orkney!
The handle is made from wood ethically and responsibly sourced in Orkney (usually driftwood) whilst the 'brush' is made from dried heather from our own land. The besom can be decorated with threads, ribbons and charms of your choice (depending on availability).

These miniature besoms are easier to transport home than a full-sized besom (Esmerelda is about 1.5 ms long) and are probably easier to store in the average home too. Sizes to order, maximum probably about 1 foot / 30 cms in length.

Please order via email, stating your full requirements and allow plenty of time for manufacture.  Prices start at £15 plus P&P (at cost) to anywhere in the world.

Handcarved Stones
We take natural Orkney stones and carve designs into them; they make lovely ornaments, altar items or pendants. Designs can be ancient prehistoric symbols such as spirals and chevrons, runes and oghams, or other symbols.

During ritual, a 'Stone Blessing' can be performed for you. One of these handcarved stones can be passed from guest to guest, each person adding a prayer or Blessing or wish for you. You then keep the stone as a beautiful reminder of time in Orkney.

Prices start from £15 plus P&P (at cost) to anywhere in the world. They can be supplied with or without a handstitched pouch or presentation box on request. Please order in advance and allow plenty of time for manufacture.

Copies of Pictish Charm Stones

We make copies of Pictish Charm Stones. The Picts were the Late Iron Age inhabitants of Orkney (and elsewhere in Scotland) and the Pictish period dates from before the Viking colonisation, at the beginning of the first millennium AD.

The Picts seem to have practised magic. At several Pictish sites, such as brochs, archaeologists have found pebbles, often quartz, with strange patterns and decorations painted on them with ground haematite mixed with a fixative. The usual interpretation is that these were 'charm stones' used as lucky talismans. There are several excellent examples in the Orkney Museum, Tankerness House, Kirkwall.

Our copies are based on originals that have been found in Orkney. The natural quartz pebbles were collected by us from the beach and have been hand painted with ground haematite mixed with eggs from free-range hens. The decoration is crude to match the originals and are of similar design.

During ritual, a 'Stone Blessing' can be performed for you. A Charm Stone can be passed from guest to guest, each person adding a prayer or Blessing or wish for you. You then keep the stone as a beautiful reminder of your special time in Orkney.

Prices start from £10 plus P&P (at cost) to anywhere in the world. They can be supplied with or without a handstitched pouch or presentation box on request. Please order in advance and allow plenty of time for manufacture.
Ogham & Rune Sets
Handmade and carved ogham or rune sets. These can be incorporated into Blessings ceremonies as a form of divination.

Prices start from £50 plus P&P (at cost) to anywhere in the world. They are supplied with a handstitched pouch with a Thor's Hammer charm (alternative charms also available on request). Please order in advance and allow plenty of time for manufacture.

Copies of the Odin Stone (mini)
The Odin Stone is no longer standing ... but it used to be near to the Standing Stones of Stenness and folktales say that couples would romantically make binding promises to each other by clasping hands through the natural hole.

This is our miniature version.

Prices start from £30 plus P&P (at cost) to anywhere in the world. Please order in advance and allow plenty of time for manufacture.

Handfasting Cords
A set of handmade, to your instructions, handfasting cords are included in our fees for all our relationship blessing and weddings ceremonies. However, by popular demand, we now also offer handmade handfasting cords as a stand-alone craft order to be posted to you.

The simplest is a triple plait - where one colour represents each of the people getting handfasted, and the third colour represents the relationship. But we can weave together four, five, six or more strands. The ends are handstitched and knotted - and the knots handstitched together - to ensure that your cords do not fray or unravel over the years.

We then add charms and ribbons and other lovelies (often from recycled costume jewellery) to your requirements. Below are some recent examples, together with details of some of the cord ends.

These items are made from quality materials. Please state total finished length when ordering - we recommend that cords are a minimum of 1.2ms and a maximum of 2 ms long. Please state your full requirements and allow at least a week for manufacture. Prices start at £35 plus P&P (at cost) to anywhere in the world.

Our handfasting cords are not toys. Please do not allow children or animals to play with them. The charms we use may contain traces of metals which may be toxic, such as lead.
