Spiritual Orkney is a partnership, managed and operated by us, Helen and Mark Woodsford-Dean. We live on Mainland Orkney, within view of the World Heritage Site at Brodgar, and have both been drawn to the spiritual life for over 20 years - we currently both follow broadly Pagan paths. In April 2008 we got married at the Ring of Brodgar in a fully legal Pagan wedding. We moved to Orkney in summer 2009 because we both felt very strongly that these beautiful islands were calling to us.
We are the Scottish Pagan Federation (SPF) Local Organisers for Orkney, we visit Pagans in hospital or legal custody on request, and we are the SPF Interfaith Officers for Orkney, being active members of an interfaith dialogue group in Orkney. In addition we facilitate open rituals for the eight major Pagan festivals at The Ring of Brodgar, all of which are open to anyone with a warm heart and open mind – more information on our "Open Rituals" page. We do our SPF duties on a voluntary basis.
We are both approved Celebrants for the Scottish Pagan Federation and we offer life rituals for the Pagan community whom we serve. We are two of only about a dozen Celebrants in Scotland holding a licence from National Records of Scotland to conduct fully legal wedding ceremonies.
We have both trained with and are members of The Fellowship of Professional Celebrants. Membership provides us with public liability insurance for our celebrancy services.
We have also both qualified with, and are members of, the Scottish Tourist Guides Association and are both Green Badge Guides for Orkney. Membership provides us with public liability insurance for our guiding services.
Helen is also known as "Magpie". She is an experienced archaeologist and teacher, as well as being a published author ("Iceni" a novel about Boudicca plus a variety of articles, many reproduced in her Blog).
Mark is also known as "Greycrow". His background is a combination of Druidry and shamanism, and he is currently undertaking training through the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids, at Druid grade, and has qualified in Shamanic training with Twobirds at Anam Cara, Inverness. He has also trained with the Scandinavian Centre for Shamanic Studies. Mark is qualified as an arborist, health care professional and archaeologist.
Helen is Service Assured trained which provides reassurance about our commitment to always delivering an excellent level of service (this training is recommended by Visit Scotland).
As a requirement of our past and present employments, we have both had CRB and Disclosure Scotland tests carried out on us at enhanced level in the previous 9 years and were cleared then to work in education and health-care respectively. Since then, the naughtiest thing that either of us have done is to return the occasional library book back late.
This website is very much just to provide preliminary information and to let you know that these services are available from us BUT we fully appreciate that all enquiries have unique requirements, so we will do the majority of communication with you individually and in person, either by email or telephone - it's all part of our service!
